Preserving and restoring historic properties through sustainable uses for public enjoyment, education, and inspiration.

About us

The Landmark Trust USA is a nonprofit organization based in southern Vermont that preserves and restores historic properties through creative and sustainable uses for public enjoyment, education and inspiration. Our five beautifully restored properties in Vermont, including Rudyard Kipling's Naulakha, are available year-round for short-term vacation rentals, perfect for groups of two to eight people. We also steward Scott Farm, a for-profit working farm and socially responsible Certified B Corporation. The Landmark Trust USA also offers creative place-based educational programming including public open houses at our properties, innovative student programs, and thought provoking webinars on important cultural heritage topics. Our philosophy of sustainable stewardship relies on the income from short-term vacation rentals to preserve and maintain the integrity of each distinctive building. Each stay at a Landmark Trust property supports our nonprofit mission, bringing new life to heritage buildings. The Landmark Trust USA will continue to apply this model as we bring on new historic properties. While vacation rentals defray a major portion of operating and maintenance costs, The Landmark Trust USA also relies on generous donations from supporters to help achieve our mission and expand our reach.

  • On Earth Day (and every day!) we remember how magnificent our environment is and how important it is for us to care for it. The construction and operation of buildings accounts for 37% of human-generated carbon emissions, making the building industry the single largest source of the carbon emissions causing global warming. Conserving and reusing existing buildings, as all of us in the preservation field do, is a key way we can reduce the carbon footprint buildings leave on our environment. One important additional step we're proud to be taking is the installation of a dual mount electric vehicle charging station at our Scott Farm property. This station will be available for a charge (pun intended) to guests and community members thanks to a grant from Charge Vermont and will move us closer to a world powered by sustainable and renewable energy. We can't wait to power it up! https://lnkd.in/eREwGsYB

  • We’re beyond excited to share our welcoming new logo! In crafting our first new logo since our organization was founded in the early 1990s, we worked to capture the essence of what makes The Landmark Trust USA so unique and our properties so special. The Landmark Trust USA is all about welcoming people to experience history firsthand. The cupola, inspired by the Stable at our flagship and first property, Rudyard Kipling’s Naulakha, is a recognizable sign of welcome and hospitality across time, place, and architectural styles. When you see a cupola, you know you’re about to enter a place that both exudes history and feels like home. We hope our properties always provide this same magical experience of history and hospitality to all who walk through our doors or attend our programs. May it be an inspiration and a reminder of the vacation for the history books awaiting at The Landmark Trust USA.

  • We held our inaugural Snow Golf skills competition last year on a beautiful snowy day and had so much fun we decided to make it an annual event! This year "Snow Golf: Chip, Drive, & Putt for Preservation" will take place on Sunday, February 25, at our gorgeous Scott Farm property in partnership with the Brattleboro Country Club. The event celebrates the 1890s invention of Snow Golf by Rudyard Kipling at his Vermont home, Naulakha, now our flagship overnight rental property. Get a few friends together or come solo for an afternoon of fun in the snow! All proceeds help us maintain our beautiful historic properties, produce place-based educational programs, and save additional historic buildings.

  • We’re so excited to announce our very first international Landmark Trust group tour! All are invited to join us in partnership with Travel Fever Tours and our friends at the Irish Landmark Trust from June 7-14, 2024 as we explore The Best of Northern Ireland together. We will dive into the culture and history of this incredible place from our home base: 3 former lighthouse keepers’ homes located on a bluff overlooking the sea that are part of the Irish Landmark Trust’s incredible collection. Beyond the striking location of our lodging on this trip, we will bring you to see the top sights in Northern Ireland. We’ll drive the Causeway Coastal Route and visit the Giant’s Causeway. We’ll visit castles, a distillery, the Tollymore Forest, and the beaches of Portstewart Strand. A day in Belfast will take us to the Titanic Museum, the Ulster Museum, and the nearby botanical gardens. And of course we’ll visit local pubs to hear traditional Irish music! Of course, this is isn’t just any group trip; it’s a Landmark Trust trip, so the Irish Landmark Trust staff will also be giving us a behind-the-scenes tour of the restoration and history of the Blackhead Cutter Lighthouse complex where we’ll be staying. Please consider joining us on this Landmark adventure!
