Event Description: Maple sugaring season is on the horizon and Lunenburg is actively making preparations for their yearly celebration! Many sugarmakers in this small Vermont town continue in its over two hundred years of rich sugaring heritage. The annual Maple Festival immerses visitors in everything maple. During a full day of free and affordable family activities, you will learn about the sugaring process and the local families involved through static, interactive and photographic displays, see the tapping of a tree, examine antique equipment, and experience varied expressions of “maple” through the entries in the photo, quilt square, poster, and pie baking contests. Meet and visit with Vermont’s Maple Ambassador, Katherine Ham from Sheffield, Vermont. Six local sugarhouses will be open for visitors; you will see examples of varying collection methods, including buckets and tubing, and diverse sizes of production, from supplying a family to customers around the world. At each stop you’ll sample their traditional sugaring season treat, as well. Homemade meals will give you a chance to refuel and rest between activities – pancake breakfast 8 –10:30, homemade soups and breads from noon – 3, and sugar-on-snow and maple cotton candy 10 –3.
